Want to know one of my favorite parts from my book, Healthy Sex Drive, Healthy You: What Your Libido Reveals About Your Life? It involves the differences between men’s and women’s brains and how these impact various behaviors, specifically sexual desire.
In Chapter 4, “His and Her Sex Drives: What Was God Thinking?”, I discuss the biological reasons for differences in sexual desire between men and women with regard to brain anatomy.
“…many of the differences in sexual desire between men and women have a biological basis. This structural difference in our brains begins very early in life, as early as the eighth week of gestation, when the hypothalamus- the vital regulatory center of the brain- begins to form. In the womb, the male brain is bathed in large concentrations of testosterone, which prevents the male’s hypothalamus from developing a sensitivity to estrogen. Thus, when fully formed, the male brain devotes more brain space to sexual desire as compared to female brains. It is important to remember that differences in the brains between men and women manifest themselves in generalized tendencies, not in absolute terms of behavior. By acknowledging these differences and tendencies, men and women can better understand their distinct behaviors and ease tension in their relationships. Rather than becoming frustrated at your partner’s seeming inability to express his emotions, it helps to remember that, as a female, your brain enables you to express and verbalize your feelings much more easily than he can. Your emotional center is much closer to your speech center. Examining the neurobiological reasons for this and other differences between men and women is the purpose of this chapter. Knowledge of these differences can help give you and your partner the language you need to discuss the sexual issues in your relationship and to seek compromises and resolution.” P. 71-74
Wonder why he can’t stop for directions? This also has to do with brain differences!
